An Assessment of the Extent of the Commercialization of Agriculture in Abia State, Nigeria

Abstract: The study was conducted to assess the extent of commercialization of agriculture in Abia State. The study covered 6 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state, two each from each of the three zones in the state. Data were collected from 120 households spread across 24 communities through a structured questionnaire. Data were collected over a 5-month period covering household characteristics food frequency and household coping strategies. Three concepts of commercialization were defined and used in categorizing and analyzing data. Results show that agriculture is not subsistence- oriented in terms of value of agricultural produce that is for market. Households were market-oriented in consumption as only 28.5% of the value of household consumption is from own-production. Households that are most subsistence oriented earned less in terms off- farm income compared to those that were least- subsistence oriented who earned more off-farm income given the commercialization index. The study recommends rapid development of rural finance systems because access to rural financial institution at low overhead costs will enable benefits of commercialization to spread widely across the community.

Abstract: adrenocorticotrophin (acth) is the major regulatory hormone of steroid synthesis and secretion by adrenocortical cells. the actions of acth are mediated by its specific membrane receptor (acth-r). the human acth-r gene was recently cloned, allowing systematic determination of its sequence, expression and function in adrenal tumorigenesis. the presence of oncogenic mutations of the acth-r gene in adrenocortical tumors has been reported. direct sequencing of the entire coding region of the acth-r gene of sporadic adrenocortical adenomas and carcinomas did not reveal constitutive activating mutations, indicating that this mechanism is not frequent in human adrenocortical tumorigenesis. recent studies demonstrated allelic loss of the acth-r gene in a subset of sporadic adrenocortical tumors using a psti polymorphism located in the promoter region of the acth-r gene. loss of heterozygosity of the acth-r was analyzed in 20 informative patients with a variety of benign and malignant adrenocortical tumors. three of them showed loss of heterozygosity of the acth-r gene. in addition, northern blot experiments demonstrated reduced expression of acth-r mrna in these three tumors with loss of heterozygosity, suggesting the functional significance of this finding at the transcriptional level. deletion of the acth-r gene seems to be involved in a subset of human adrenocortical tumors, contributing to cellular dedifferentiation.

Abstract: two problems inspired by paul nahin's biography of oliver heaviside, the home illumination problem and the determination of the leakage point in an undersea telegraphic cable are presented, discussed and solved in the framework of the applied electricity of the victorian age. the two problems are concrete and at the same time relatively simple illustrations of the intricate interconnections between physics and the world of practical affairs. basic elements of the theory of direct current circuits, as for example ohm's law, and high school algebra are the only tools we need to discuss them in class, at the high school level or at the fundamental university physics one.

Abstract: purpose: this article discusses the evolution of university hospitals, their characteristics, functioning and financing and their role in medical education and research. methods: data come from a workshop organized by the world health organization on university hospitals in 22 countries. results: the main finding is that these institutions are increasingly inadequate to the reality of the health sector in which they operate and to the challenges posed by the profound changes currently taking place in the health system of most countries. conclusion: a reform is needed, and the article presents a few possible strategies for reforming these hospitals.

Abstract: This article attempts to show how culture or aspects thereof can be used to comple-ment linguistic and other information in the compilation of dictionaries of African languages. Some obstacles in the way of achieving this goal are identified and proposals made on how to deal with them. Although only some cultural aspects of a single language are examined, the conclusions are valid for cultural aspects of all African languages.
Correlation between yam Minisett usage level and demographic characteristics of farmers in Rivers State

Abstract: This paper investigated the relationship between yam minisett usage level and demographic characteristics of farmers in Rivers State. Cluster sampling technique was used to select 63 respondents in the study area who were administered structured questionnaire. Data were analysed by using frequencies, percentages and Pearson correlation. The findings revealed that usage level of yam minisett was moderate and majority of the respondents were middle-aged, had formal education, were males and had between 1 and 5 years farming experience, most got information on yam minisett from Agricultural Extension agents. Of all the variables identified, only experience showed significant relationship with usage level of yam minisett. Age, education, family size, gender and source of information did not show significant relationship. (Journal of Agriculture and Social Research: 2003 3(1): 70-77)
